The Silent Struggle – Girls and Math Confidence in Dutch Classrooms

The Problem:

Although girls perform as well as boys in primary school math, many still lack confidence in their abilities. This can show up as hesitation to answer questions, skipping harder problems, or saying “I’m just not good at math.” Over time, this lack of confidence can shape their academic and career choices.

Causes:

  • Subtle gender stereotypes in classroom or media
  • Fear of failure and pressure to be perfect
  • Few role models showing girls excelling in math

The Shenmo Solution:

Shenmo programs encourage participation, regardless of gender, by using non-judgmental, supportive group learning and personal goal-setting. Girls thrive in this environment—often becoming leaders in class. In Leiden, one shy 10-year-old girl began the year avoiding math, but after six months at Shenmo, she led her team in a mental math competition.

Steps for Parents and Teachers:

  • Share stories of female mathematicians and scientists.
  • Praise persistence and strategy over speed or correctness.
  • Enroll girls in group-based programs like Shenmo that build both skill and self-belief.
